Boredom Buster: Coloring Your Windows

Today was a snow day at our house. We got a nasty rain/snow mix all night long and woke up to horrible road conditions outside. Many of the local schools closed, and I figured I better stay in with the kids despite our plans to go to an aquarium. As fate would have it The Captain was in an awful mood. I think it was a combination of teething, tummy aches, and being nearly 1 1/2. By eleven o’clock I was done. I was worn out, cranky, and ready for the kids to take their naps, but alas 11:00 is too early for naps in our house.

Then I remembered a genius idea I had last week! We would draw on our windows with our bathtub crayons. Our crayons are made by Crayola and come in little plastic holders, but for this project I took them out of the holders. They look just like normal crayons without the paper on.

Here are our bathtub crayons. Notice how we don’t have very many and most are short and broken? The Captain went through a bathtub crayon eating phase. I am proud to announce that phase is over. Now if we could just get over the “dump every toy out of its neatly organized container and drive your mother crazy” phase. Sorry, back to bathtub crayons. They are much softer than normal crayons and they easily wash off smooth surfaces with soap and water.

Here is my cranky Captain coloring. You can tell that even the foul-mooded sailor had something to smile about with this activity!

Here is Moo coloring with both hands. It’s her new thing. AND, she holds the crayon the correct way in both hands so I am doubly proud!

See this picture? See how my kids are playing and picking up crayons and not whining and wanting to be held? Mission Accomplished: two happy kids and one mama who gets to enjoy a quick sip of coffee.

Here is a train and some shapes. The Captain is really into learning shapes right now. He calls every shape a triangle.

Here is the picture of Princess Rapunzel that Moo asked me to draw. See all those lines next to Rapunzel? Those are snakes that my little budding artist drew. She has mastered snake drawing but refuses to move on to any other object. I think she inherited my fear of looking foolish.

I even joined in on the fun! And yes, I do love you!

Happy Drawing!

Disclaimer: I have only used one type of bathtub crayons to do this project, so I can’t guarantee how other brands will work. Also, I cleaned the window after a couple of hours, because I wanted to make sure the crayon came off.
